San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello is considering shutting down Logan Webb for the rest of the 2026 season after another difficult outing from the team’s ace.

The decision comes after Webb struggled against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, allowing six earned runs on eight hits over five innings. He did strike out seven, but the Giants ultimately fell to San Diego.
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that the Giants are weighing whether Webb should make another start with the team already eliminated from postseason contention.

Webb’s latest outing continued a rough stretch for the right-hander. He has allowed at least five earned runs in three of his last five starts, including a five-run outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 1.
The 29-year-old entered Sunday with an 8-8 record, a 4.31 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 155.2 innings. He has also dealt with a heavy workload this year after pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic before returning to the Giants.

Against the Padres, Webb allowed five runs in the first two innings, including a two-run home run by Manny Machado. He settled down afterward but could not prevent another loss.
There is little reason for San Francisco to push its ace with the Giants already out of the playoff race. The team was officially eliminated on Sept. 6 following a loss to the New York Mets.
The Giants also placed Rafael Devers on the 60-day IL Sunday, ending his season because of a core muscle injury. Devers hit 37 home runs and drove in 98 runs this year, leaving San Francisco without another major piece of its lineup.
With the season winding down, the Giants have more reason to think about 2027 than squeeze extra innings out of Webb. Giving him an early offseason could be the safest path as the club prepares for next year.
