California manufacturers can apply for a new “Made in California” product label after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new program to help consumers identify products made in-state.

Newsom said Friday that his Office Business and Economic Development and the California Office of the Small Business Advocate would launch the new statewide marketing program, noting that 89% of in-state manufacturers are small businesses.
“’Made in California’ isn’t just a label. It’s a statement about innovation, opportunity and the people building the future right here in our state — it’s a point of pride,” he said in a statement.
Products must be deemed “substantially made” in-state to qualify for the program. That means a business must source at least 51% of its workers, raw materials or overhead costs in California to be eligible for the “Made in California” program.
Program fees are waived through the end of the year, and successful applicants will be hold their Made in California license for two years, before they can apply for renewal.

The in-state label news comes the same week that President Donald Trump reignited an ongoing trade war with Canada by imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, car parts and steel after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed.
Canada imposed retaliatory taxes in response, and Trump issued an executive order on Thursday renaming Lake Ontario — which straddles the border between Ontario and New York — Lake America.
Newsom previously asked countries to directly trade with California last year, when Trump first announced international tariffs on most countries.
In March, he and Attorney General Rob Bonta sued the White House to stop new global tariffs after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Trump’s original trade measures were illegal.
