Progress on the ambitious Railyards project marches forward, including a new stadium for the city’s professional soccer league, Sacramento Republic FC. Once complete, it will be the largest outdoor professional sports stadium in the region.

In order to ensure that the stadium experience is fully infused with Sacramento spirit, Wilton Rancheria and Sacramento Republic FC have selected Food Frontier to work with its hospitality partner, Levy Restaurants, to shape the food program.
Food Frontier is a consultancy dedicated to championing the Sacramento Valley’s vibrant food ecosystem through strategic partnerships, storytelling and food innovation.
Food Frontier and Wilton Rancheria previously collaborated on programming for Terra Madre Americas, the Slow Food International event that ran at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center last September. The campaign, called We Are The Confluence, used the convergence of the American and Sacramento rivers as a metaphor for how generations of farming families and different cultures come together to make Sacramento a unique place.
After working on Terra Madre Americas, the two groups expanded their partnership, leading to the stadium project.

“It just kind of spurred a bunch of ideas about what it looks like for a tribe in the modern day to kind of have its own food sovereignty. I think in the modern day we really have to look at what’s the responsibility of a local region in their food practices,” said Food Frontier co-founder Brad Cecchi, who is also the chef-owner of East Sacramento restaurant Canon and West Sacramento’s Franquette.
While the exact vision is yet to be hammered out, the core concept is to ensure the entire food story at the stadium is steeped in the Sacramento region’s farms, produce and makers. The team’s goal is to deliver an experience that speaks to the excellence of Sacramento’s rich culinary scene.
The land at where the Railyards development sits was part of Wilton Rancheria’s ancestral homeland. Wilton Rancheria and Republic FC turned to Food Frontier to help highlight the people and traditions already defining the region’s food identity, and to create something specific and special.
“You go to the Chesapeake Bay, and there’s obviously a crab sandwich, a signature dish there. So we’re really working alongside Levy to develop those signature items, and then just making sure that the look and feel and touch and smell of everything just bleeds Sacramento,” Cecchi said.
