It’s the Big Day of Giving: How Sacramento nonprofits are doing so far

Sacramento region nonprofits had raised more than $9.5 million on the Big Day of Giving by Thursday afternoon.

The annual event, a Sacramento region tradition launched by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation in 2013, has raised more than $117 million since its creation.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to rally around our nonprofit sector and provide contributions,” said Kerry Wood, the foundation’s chief executive officer, at her organization’s command center on Thursday.

The headquarters was enjoying a visit of kittens from Mission Meow Cat Rescue and bunnies from the Sacramento House Rabbit Society.

Donors can select from 910 nonprofits that have signed up to participate, a record. Donations can be made at bigdayofgiving.org.

Top Big Day of Giving recipients

From the foundation’s leaderboard as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday:

  1. Yolo Food Bank: 356 donations for $250,122
  2. Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera: 61 donations for $244,768
  3. Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services: 423 donations for $229,796
  4. Volunteers of America: 115 donations for $150,434
  5. Capital Public Radio: 420 donations for $147,534
  6. Meals on Wheels Yolo County: 265 donations for $140,942
  7. Sacramento Loaves & Fishes: 259 donations for $129,899
  8. Sacramento Children’s Home: 192 donations for $129,406
  9. First Tee — Greater Sacramento: 227 donations for $126,551
  10. Sacramento Splash: 333 donations for $126,124
