Prescribed burn in Rancho Cordova creates smoky skies. Where roads are closed

Residents of Rancho Cordova and Folsom may see smoke Wednesday because of a prescribed burn at Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area.

The prescribed burn, near White Rock Road and Scott Road, will happen through 4 p.m. Wednesday, and Scott Road from White Rock Road to Latrobe Road was expected to remain closed until about 1 p.m., according to a release from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

“This burn will treat approximately 175 acres of grassland and oak woodland to reduce highly flammable vegetation and enhance fire protection for nearby communities,” the release from Cal Fire’s Amador-El Dorado unit said.

Residents should expect smoke impacts nearby, according to Cal Fire. AlertCalifornia’s Ben Bolte 2 camera showed significant smoke in the area as of noon Wednesday.

Cal Fire advised drivers to allow extra travel time or use alternate routes to avoid delays near the burn area.
