Sacramento-area Memorial Day weekend forecast brings cooler air, some wildfire risk

The unofficial start of summer is arriving with near-perfect weather for backyard barbecues, lake trips and Memorial Day travel across Northern California — though forecasters warn gusty winds and dry conditions could also elevate wildfire danger through the holiday weekend.

After a hot Friday that will push Sacramento into the low 90s, temperatures are expected to gradually cool through Monday as stronger Delta breezes and onshore winds bring more comfortable conditions to the Valley, foothills and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

“There’s a healthy Delta breeze,” expected Friday evening, the weather service said, helping cool Sacramento and surrounding areas after daytime highs climb into the low 90s.

Forecasters are also warning hikers and campers to stay alert in the mountains Friday afternoon, where isolated thunderstorms could develop along the Sierra crest and Coast Range.

The weather service said there is a 15% to 25% chance of thunderstorms along the Sierra crest Friday afternoon and evening. Any storms that form could produce lightning, gusty winds and small hail, potentially affecting outdoor recreation heading into the holiday weekend.

At lower elevations, forecasters are increasingly focused on fire danger as dry vegetation combines with gusty winds and low humidity. The strongest winds are expected from Saturday through Memorial Day, particularly across the Sacramento Valley, Delta and nearby foothills. Forecasters said those conditions could allow fires to spread more rapidly if ignitions occur.

The National Weather Service urged residents to be cautious with campfires, barbecue grills, fireworks and anything else capable of sparking a fire as Northern California moves deeper into the dry season.
