Adames out of SF Giants’ lineup for just second time this season due to ‘lower-half pain’

SAN FRANCISCO – Willy Adames wasn’t in Wednesday afternoon’s lineup against the Washington Nationals due to “lower-half pain,” according to manager Tony Vitello.

Vitello said he wouldn’t label Adames’ ailment as an injury, describing the discomfort as being from the knee to the hip.

“I think it affected the way he was moving a little bit,” Vitello said. “More based off communication with our training staff. Trying to get a little bit of a bonus with the day off tomorrow if he’s not used in today’s game.”

Adames’ absence marks just the second time this season that San Francisco’s starting shortstop hasn’t been in the starting lineup, the other instance being April 26 against the Miami Marlins.

“His goal is always to play 162,” Vitello said. “I think if his body’s feeling great, it’s doable. But again, yesterday, the read from everybody was he was fighting through that thing. I’ve said it a million times … is that we are blessed with guys that want to be out there every day. … His choice was to play, but getting with the training staff, feel like that’s the best thing to do.”

Adames has played nearly every game since signing a seven-year, $182 million contract ahead of the 2025 season, missing just two contests last season. Over 67 games this season, Adames is hitting .234/.281/.431 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Sanmartín reinstated from injured list

Left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartín completed his rehab assignment and was reinstated from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of Wednesday’s game.

Right-hander Tristan Beck was optioned to Sacramento, while outfielder Will Brennan was designated for assignment.

Sanmartín, claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in the offseason, was in competition for a spot on the Giants’ Opening Day roster before sustaining a right hip flexor strain during an exhibition game with Team Colombia ahead of the World Baseball Classic. The injury robbed Sanmartín of an opportunity to pitch for Team Colombia, which went 1-3 during pool play.

Over 10 appearances with Sacramento and the ACL (Arizona Complex League) Giants, Sanmartín allowed seven earned runs over 9 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts to two walks.
