Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz has provided an update on Adley Rutschman after the catcher missed his second straight game with left hamstring tightness. The 28-year-old didn’t play in either of Baltimore’s last two games against the Seattle Mariners as the Orioles continued to monitor the issue.

Orioles beat reporter Jake Rill, posted on X that the All-Star catcher is dealing with tightness in his left hamstring and remains day-to-day. The club hasn’t indicated that an injured list move is under consideration.
The injury occurred after Rutschman completed a demanding stretch in which he appeared in 11 consecutive games as either the starting catcher or designated hitter. Baltimore chose to give him time to recover rather than risk worsening the issue. His absence has created additional challenges behind the plate because fellow catcher Samuel Basallo is also managing a wrist injury.

With both catchers unavailable, the Orioles turned to Sam Huff, whom they recalled from Triple-A Norfolk over the weekend. Huff handled catching duties during Tuesday’s game and provided needed depth while the Orioles waited for updates on Rutschman and Basallo.
Rutschman remains one of the most important players on Baltimore’s roster. He has appeared in 66 games this season and is batting .247 with 10 home runs, 34 RBIs, 31 walks, and a .742 OPS. He continues to play a major role in the middle of the Orioles’ lineup while also serving as the club’s primary catcher.

The Orioles selected Rutschman with the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft after a standout career at Oregon State. He won the Pac-12 Player of the Year Award in 2019 and signed with Baltimore for a then-record draft bonus of $8.1 million. Since making his major league debut in 2022, he has developed into one of baseball’s top catchers.
Rutschman earned All-Star selections in 2023 and 2024 and has helped lead the team’s return to contention in recent seasons. The Orioles are hoping his hamstring issue remains minor and there is optimism that he can avoid a longer absence.
Baltimore is expected to remain cautious given the demands of the catcher position and Rutschman’s importance to the lineup. For now, the Orioles will continue to rely on Huff behind the plate while monitoring his recovery.
Rutschman was limited to just 90 games last year after two oblique strains that marked the first injured list stints of his MLB career. The team should have a clearer update on his status in the coming days as he works through the tightness and aims to return to the lineup.
