One of the most riveting subplots of the 2026 offseason was the possibility of all-time great LeBron James joining the team he had worked so hard to defeat in the 2010s: the Golden State Warriors.

The thought of LeBron joining forces with his fellow legend, Stephen Curry, kept basketball fans on the edge of their seats. Given how the two played together on the Olympic gold-medal-winning Team USA squad, Bron throwing picture-perfect passes to Curry on the perimeter would have been hoops nirvana.
However, longtime Warriors head coach Steve Kerr kept it real, saying that he really didn’t think LeBron would join them.
Nothing but barbershop talk
With no on-court action to discuss, pundits are left with nothing much to talk about. And so, they usually concoct scenarios to dissect, and one of those was LeBron moving to the Bay Area to join the Warriors. Kerr, though, knew that based on the info he had, landing the versatile 6’9″ superstar was nothing but a pipe dream.
“I don’t think it’s exactly earth-shattering news, or I don’t think I’ll get fined for saying, like, it never really felt like he was, you know, coming here,” Kerr
“It was more, to me, it was more speculation than anything. I think we would have had a much better sense that, you know, something was going to happen.”
The thought of it happening, though, was too rich to ignore: two superstars who helped define eras teaming up for one last shot at glory. However, Kerr was actually surprised to hear from fans who didn’t approve of James’ potential arrival.
“It’s been really interesting, though, hearing fans around the Bay. Like, you know, people will randomly come up to me and say, ‘I’m glad we didn’t get Bron.’ And I’m like, ‘Really?'” Kerr revealed. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah. It’s like he’s not supposed to be on our – he’s a rival.’ Like, you know, and I get that as a sports fan. It’d be like, you know, should Magic and Bird have played on the same team?”

Living with who they have
LeBron eventually signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, creating the latest superteam with the potential to dominate the league. As for the Warriors? With All-Star shooting guard Jimmy Butler not expected to return to the court until late in the season, many believe the Warriors will be in the mix for a Play-in Tournament spot, hardly what most people want for Curry, who’s in the twilight of his career.
“Look, we did the best we could to put together the roster. I think Yaxel is going to help quite a bit. He’s a really good player. He’s older. He’s mature. Watching him work out with our guys, he’s going to help us,” Kerr stated.
“Gui Santos, Brandin Podziemski, these guys are going to help us. Georges Niang, Brandon Williams are new signees, nothing earth-shattering, but really good players who can play a lot of minutes. So, I think our depth is the answer,” he continued.
“We’re going to have to rely on our whole roster, including our two-way players at times and fortunately, I do feel really good about the guys we have who have kind of filled out the back end of the roster and I think they can help us hold down the fort until Jimmy and Moses get back second half of the year,” Kerr concluded.
