Jacksonville is 3-1 and sits atop the AFC South, one game better than the Indianapolis Colts, through the first quarter of Liam Coen’s second season as head coach.

Here are the first quarter grades for the Jaguars.

Offense: B+

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has played like an NFL MVP candidate, ranking third among qualifying signal callers in passer rating (111.2), seventh in completion percentage (69.2%) and tied for seventh in touchdown passes (8).

Lawrence has spread the ball around to Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr. and tight end Brenton Strange. But Bhayshul Tuten and the offensive line have set the tone, helping the Jaguars rank 11th in the league in rushing

There’s still more for Coen and Jacksonville’s offense to unlock.

Defense: A-

Jacksonville is 25th in total defense (354.5 yards allowed per game) and 31st in pass defense (280.3) but is giving up just 13.3 points per game, the second fewest in the league.

The Jaguars have bent but not broken thanks to their run defense, which has been the best in the AFC (74.3 yards per game). they’ve also harassed opposing quarterbacks, tying for eighth in the league in sacks (10).

That pressure has helped them lead the league in turnover margin (plus-6) on the strength of eight takeaways.

The turnovers are a bit lucky, but if the Jags keep defending the run as they have, they’ll be just fine.

Special Teams: C+

Cam Little is still a weapon, but he has two missed field goals, albeit from 54 and 70 yards. The missed 54-yard field goal in Denver gave the Broncos a short field and led to their game-winning touchdown in Jacksonville’s 20-13 loss in Week 2.

The Jaguars haven’t needed their special teams to do much, outside of Coen trying to set up Little for the first successful 70-yard field goal in regular-season history. Punter Logan Cooke has been about league average yards per punt (48.4) but is better than average in net punting yards (43.4, 12th in the league).

Coaching: A-

Coen has avoided any lingering hangover effect from the Jaguars’ wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills last season. His staff has dialed up successful game plans to rout both the Patriots and Cleveland Browns, who is 3-1 and leads the AFC North.

Coen may only be in his second year as an NFL head coach, but he seems to have a good thing going with his core and coaches. The Jags look like a bona fide Super Bowl contender in the top-heavy AFC.
