Justin Herbert enters his seventh NFL season as the Los Angeles Chargers prepare to unveil a new offense under coordinator Mike McDaniel, but with the quarterback still searching for the first playoff victory of his career.

Adding to the already-big expectations surrounding Herbert, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, appearing on Netflix’s “The White House with Michael Irvin,” has now issued his boldest prediction yet for the quarterback.
According to Harbaugh, the 28-year-old will ultimately finish his career as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
“Allow me to call my shot, like Babe Ruth pointing the bat over the center field: Justin Herbert, when it’s all said and done, when his career comes to an end, I predict he will be known as the greatest, best ever, to play the position of quarterback,” Harbaugh said. “When it’s all said and done, and his career is finished, we’re going to look back and say, ‘Yep, that’s the best that ever did it.’”

Herbert has plenty of work ahead to reach the historic standard Harbaugh established. He has never won a playoff game, earned first-team All-Pro honors, or won NFL MVP.

The Chargers have reached the playoffs three times over the past four seasons without recording a postseason victory.
Even then, it looks like Harbaugh and McDaniel both agree on Herbert’s talent.
“(McDaniel) saw the same thing in Justin Herbert,” Harbaugh said. “The way those two — they’re football smart and book smart, too. You got a Yale grad, and a 4.0 guy. You might say, how smart are they, coach? They’re so smart that I wish I knew how smart they were.”
Los Angeles and Harbaugh believe their new and revamped offense after replacing Greg Roman with McDaniel will get Herbert over the hump.

The Chargers host the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET in Herbert’s first start of the 2026 NFL season.
