Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jonathan Greenard will remain sidelined, with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio saying during a press conference that it will be “a couple weeks at least” before Greenard returns to football activities. Greenard was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on the first day of training camp after suffering a pectoral strain during offseason lifting.

The Eagles traded for Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings for two third-round picks. On arrival, Greenard signed a four-year, $100 million extension ($50 million guaranteed).
Last year, Greenard dealt with a left shoulder injury suffered in Week 10 of the 2025 regular season. He missed two games before returning in a limited role but re-aggravated the injury in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys, which led to season-ending surgery.
While he only had three sacks, many, including the Eagles, view it as an outlier due to the injury. In 2023 and 2024, Greenard produced back-to-back 12-plus-sack seasons, earning his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024.
The Eagles remain unconcerned about the long-term impact of Greenard’s pectoral injury, but Fangio is aware of the struggles that come from returning from an injury and missing training camp.

“The banging, the running, the change of direction, the fatigue of it. He’s gonna lose that,” Fangio said. “That’s gonna be something we have to be conscious with him when he does get back.”
While Greenard is returning to form early in the season, the Eagles have plenty of talent and depth in the edge rusher room to hold down the fort. Jalyx Hunt has reportedly lived in the backfield during training camp and new signings A.J. Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie have both had strong camps as well.
Greenard has been attending defensive meetings and learning the new system from the sideline. While he has not had the chance to practice with his new team, Greenard has already been impressed by the mentality of his teammates.
“It moved me so much,” Greenard said during his introductory press conference. “I was in Minnesota, I didn’t see any hardware there. I was in Houston, didn’t see any hardware. So, I actually see it and hear guys talk about it, you know, Jalen [Hurts] texted me and was like, ‘We’re gonna get one,’ and it’s not just talk. This is how everybody carries themselves around the building.”
