Former Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is being sued by a business owned by the father of former Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton.

The Hornets traded Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves last month, but a new lawsuit is following him there. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Mecklenburg Superior Court, is a continuation of the claims Agape Property Management made against Ball’s manager, Jermaine Jackson, earlier this year. A judge previously evicted Jackson after the company said Jackson owed more than $280,000 in unpaid rent and HOA compliance fees. Now, the company claims Ball is responsible for that money, too.
When Ball moved to Charlotte in 2020, he signed a lease for two luxury apartments above Chima Steakhouse in uptown, the lawsuit says. Newton, the former Panthers quarterback who played in the Super Bowl in 2016, previously owned both units before they became owned and managed by his family’s company.
For the past five years, Ball lived in 4B. He sublet 5B to Jackson, who has been Ball’s manager since high school, according to the lawsuit. Ball eventually bought 4B outright for $2.47 million, and he continued leasing 5B for Jackson.
But Jackson didn’t pay his rent, the lawsuit contends. And Ball didn’t step up to pay Agape Property Management what was owed.

This went on for more than a year, the lawsuit says.
Jackson’s attorney previously said Jackson refused to pay an increased $13,500 monthly rent for the unit when the aquarium was leaking. He paid the original rate, which was $7,500, instead. Newton’s father, Cecil Newton, showed up in a small Mecklenburg district courtroom in May as his attorneys argued the case. A judge found that photos of the leak did not show that the unit was uninhabitable.
Ball recently settled a lawsuit filed by the family of a boy who claimed Ball ran over his foot while driving away from the Spectrum Center after a scrimmage game.
