Bystanders subdued Samuel Hartbower, 33, outside the Save Mart supermarket in the 800 block of J Street before Marysville police officers arrived about 2:15 p.m. Sunday. Officers found a weapon nearby.
Inside the store, bystanders and officers tried to help a wounded man until emergency responders arrived. The man died at the scene, Marysville police Lt. Chris Shippen said in a statement.
The second man went on his own to a hospital with injuries that police described as serious but not life-threatening. Officers later learned that the man’s wounds were connected to the Save Mart attack.

Police said Hartbower did not know either victim.
Police arrested Hartbower at the scene and booked him into the Yuba County Jail in Marysville on suspicion of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.
Hartbower had an outstanding felony arrest warrant on an assault charge out of Yuba City, in neighboring Sutter County, and was on post-release community supervision in Yuba County, police said.
The Yuba County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the dead man’s name after notifying his relatives.
