With more exposure online, MPJ has embraced the spotlight and has never been shy about sharing his stances on various subjects in the everyday lives of not only NBA players and professional athletes, but regular folks as well. Although he has already made headlines for his, for some, controversial statements about dating, masculinity, and pretty much everything modern-day fans want to know, MPJ doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Next on the table were his religious views on sexuality and why he has a problem with people saying that those of a different sexual orientation are, literally, going to hell.

Porter doesn’t agree with every Christian
Growing up in a deeply religious household and attending Father Tolton Regional Catholic High School in Columbia, Missouri, definitely planted the early roots of Christianity’s importance in Porter’s life. Obviously, faith was a major part of his upbringing, and even after becoming an NBA champion and one of the more recognizable players in the Association, MPJ has continued to openly talk about his beliefs.
However, the 28-year-old shooter isn’t afraid to speak up when he doesn’t agree with everything that comes from people who consider themselves good Christians. And he pointed to one of those sensitive subjects in a recent episode of his “Curious Mike” podcast.
It is the talk about gay people, and for Porter, singling out homosexuality isn’t the right way of interpreting the Bible, especially while ignoring the other sins that are also mentioned.
“Christian people who, you know, say those things, say, ‘Oh, if you’re gay, you’re going to hell.’ Things like that. That pisses me off so much because, just like you said, they’re not acknowledging anything else that the Bible says that you can’t do,” Porter

Porter doesn’t understand the double standard
Being the principled man that he is, Porter’s point was to question why some believers turn a blind eye to certain issues while seemingly pointing to another one as some sort of “deadly sin.” For MPJ, it simply doesn’t make sense.
“And the reason in the Bible that we don’t have to go to hell is because obviously Jesus came, died on the cross for all of our sins,” Porter continued.
Porter also pointed out that Christians themselves aren’t free of sin, mentioning things such as lying and gluttony that the Bible also speaks against. So, in his eyes, putting so much emphasis on one particular sin while almost ignoring others simply doesn’t add up.
MPJ certainly isn’t afraid of opening conversations that can quickly become controversial. But in this case, his message was pretty straightforward.
For someone who grew up around Christianity, Porter doesn’t seem bothered by people being imperfect. What bothers him is when Christians forget their own imperfections while judging somebody else.
