The Sunset Travel Center is planned on about 2.6 acres near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and South Loop Road in unincorporated Placer County, about 2 miles south of Thunder Valley Casino Resort.

The project is in the early stages of Placer County’s planning process. The location is designed to handle more than just passenger cars. Project plans show access routes for large trucks, including 65-foot trucks with two-axle trailers and fuel tankers.

Preliminary plans call for a gas station with an AM-PM mini-mart building, restrooms and storage areas. Plans also included a car wash, gasoline pumps and a separate area for diesel and truck fueling.

The project also includes space for future electric vehicle charging.

The proposal does not yet have a construction date and developer declined to speak with The Sacramento Bee about the plan.

The project was expected to go before the Placer County zoning administrator. It would move to the Planning Commission only if the zoning administrator’s decision were appealed.

According to county officials, the Community Development Resource Agency has completed an initial review of the proposal. The project is currently on track to be considered at a zoning administrator meeting in early 2027.
