A new Filipino-inspired cafe, which specializes in matcha and coffee, has opened in downtown Sacramento.

Located in an alley off busy 8th St., Kaway Cafe, 726 Merchant St., in a small speciality coffee shop. It’s new to the Sacramento coffee scene, opening Sept. 22.
Pronounced ‘kah-why” Kaway means to wave your hand in Tagalog. The owners wrote online they chose the name because “We wanted the cafe to feel welcoming, a place to come in, gather, and stay awhile.”
They also said they were inspired to open a cafe that felt like home, a place that serves the Filipino sweets they grew up with, but with their own imprint.
“We bring different things to Kaway, but we’re building it together,” a sign in the cafe read. “Some things will feel familiar. Some have our own spin. And some are here simply because we think they’re really good.”

Kaway Cafe serves coffee, matcha, hojicha and tea, according to its menu on social media. Its specialty drinks include Filipino beverages such as a buko pandan latte, made from the leaves of the tropical pandan plant.
They also serve ube lattes, made with the purple yams native to the Philippines. Earl Grey calamansi iced tea, turon latte, and matcha mansi soda are some of the other menu items.
Kaway Cafe replaced Bumble Bear Coffee, now a mobile cafe cart set up at 770 L St. Bumble Bear Coffee moved over the summer.
Kaway Cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays. Hours of operation will expand at a later date, according to the owners.
