Jayden Daniels has been the butt of the joke on social media for the past several days.

The Washington Commanders third-year quarterback had his lawyer send a cease and desist letter to LSU, demanding the school stop using his name, image and likeness to promote the football program. LSU upset Daniels by giving out his No. 5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett.
“The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU’s decision to give Jayden’s number to another player,” the statement from Daniels’ spokesperson said. “Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university.”
Pickett wore No. 3 as a freshman, but was promised No. 5 as a recruit. Lane Kiffin is fulfilling that promise in 2026, despite Daniels’ wishes to not let another player wear the jersey number.
“Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected,” the statement said. “His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU.”
In recent days, everyone from MLB teams to brands to social media aggregators have been making jokes about Daniels’ wishes to keep No. 5 to himself.

Mike Florio: Jayden Daniels has learned ‘costly’ P.R. lesson
Florio believes that Daniels and his camp ultimately overreacted, even if they feel that they were in the right.
“The problem is that, even though LSU was in the wrong by making multiple promises that conflicted, Daniels overreacted. And there’s no indication it was Daniels himself who blew a gasket over the situation. It was his camp, his team – and possibly his agent-mom – that picked a five-inch molehill to die on,” he wrote.
“Daniels is a very good quarterback, whose second season was marred by injury. He has now become a punchline, without taking a single snap in his third NFL season.”
It’s possible that this came from someone other than Daniels, and if that’s the case, he needs to get his team under control. They work for him.
