Mike Vrabel, the New England Patriots and their 2026 NFL season got a lot more interesting than a routine road win on Sunday. New England left Buffalo with a 29-26 victory over the Bills, improving to 2-2, but the final score only tells half of what happened before the final whistle.

The Patriots controlled much of the afternoon before Buffalo rallied to take a 26-21 lead with 4:27 left, setting up a finish nobody saw coming.
Drake Maye answered right when it mattered, finishing 22 of 37 for 269 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Romeo Doubs. His biggest throw came after Buffalo had taken the lead, a 23-yard touchdown to Efton Chism III on a one-handed grab that flipped the game.
New England converted the two-point try to go back up 29-26, and Craig Woodson sealed it with an interception of Josh Allen at the 1:05 mark, handing the Bills their first loss of the season. That dramatic finish, though, wasn’t the only story from Buffalo.
New England actually led 14-7 with 1:40 remaining in the first half when Marcus Jones was flagged for defensive holding, wiping out a third-down stop near the goal line and keeping Buffalo’s drive alive at the worst possible time.
Vrabel did not take it well, and the officiating crew heard every word of it. Now, the Patriots coach is facing the possibility of league discipline after officials picked up his comments on the field mic.

Vrabel was heard telling an official, “That’s an [expletive] terrible [expletive] call,” and was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that moved Buffalo half the distance to the goal line, setting up a first-and-goal situation.

Josh Allen scored on a quarterback sneak on the very next play, sending both teams into the locker room tied at 14. Verbal abuse of an official falls under the league’s unsportsmanlike conduct rules, and the NFL’s 2026 fine schedule lists $14,926 for a player’s first offense in that category.
Coaches, however, aren’t tied to that number directly, since the league handles their discipline through a separate process. There’s still a useful comparison point: Packers coach Matt LaFleur was fined $14,069 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty back in 2024, and the NFL typically announces its weekly fines on Saturdays.
The Patriots will host the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium next Sunday, October 11, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
