Fresno police said they received 911 calls about a single gunshot fired in the area of East Dudley and North Broadway Street, and also received a ShotSpotter activation of a one-round shot in the area.

When officers arrived, they found a man in handcuffs with a gunshot wound to his midsection.

The man was identified as 32-year-old David Gonzalez, an off-duty federal agent assigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, police said.

Police detectives investigated the incident and said that a resident in the neighborhood arrived home to find Gonzalez sleeping on her front lawn.

She notified her 72-year-old father, who was inside.

The father went outside to tell Gonzalez to leave. Police said that when Gonzalez woke up, he appeared intoxicated and agitated.

Gonzalez then allegedly assaulted the man, causing him several injuries as he was forced to the ground, according to police.

The daughter tried to intervene, but Gonzalez allegedly attacked her, causing her to fall to the ground, according to police. The victim, in fear for the physical safety of himself and his daughter, produced a gun and fired one shot at Gonzalez, police said.

The daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived on the scene and placed Gonzalez in handcuffs.

Gonzalez was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police said the victim who shot Gonzalez is not facing criminal charges, and was legally in possession of the firearm that was used.

Police said Gonzalez is in custody on felony assault charges. The victims’ injuries are still being evaluated.

Police said it is unknown why Gonzalez was in the area, but it has been confirmed that he was off-duty and alone at the time of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing. Since the start of the week, there have been reports of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests. Local officials and immigrant advocacy groups say ICE has arrested more than 70 people in the Fresno area this week as agents use racial profiling tactics and target work sites.

These arrests appear to part of a larger statewide surge.
