California Highway Patrol officers are investigating after a man was struck and killed Tuesday night on Highway 50 near downtown Sacramento.

The fatal collision happened just before 10 p.m. on westbound Highway 50, east of Interstate 5 in the Southside Park neighborhood. Responding CHP officers found the man’s body lying in the roadway after receiving calls from dispatchers. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the man was in the No. 7 lane of westbound Highway 50 as the driver of a Honda was traveling in the lane. It was not known how the man got onto the freeway.
The motorist in the Honda told officers they saw the vehicle directly ahead swerve suddenly to the left. The driver then saw the pedestrian in the roadway but could not avoid the collision, CHP officials said. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to have factored in the collision, investigators said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the man’s name once family members were notified.
The fatal collision closed multiple lanes of westbound Highway 50 for approximately two hours as investigators worked. The late-night wreck was the third partial closure of the busy Sacramento-area freeway Tuesday.

The highway’s westbound lanes reopened about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Later that afternoon, a man shot and killed a woman outside a Howe Avenue restaurant in Arden Arcade before leading Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies onto eastbound Highway 50 between Howe and Watt avenues, where the man took his own life. The ordeal closed much of the eastbound freeway for more than three hours during the evening commute, tying up surface streets across Sacramento’s grid and around Sacramento State.
