Philadelphia activated left-handed reliever Tanner Banks from the 60-day injured list and optioned right-hander Grant Holman to Triple-A. The Phillies also designated infielder Christian Cairo for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Banks.
The move brings Banks back after he missed more than two months with a left forearm strain. He was placed on the injured list following his July 8 appearance before eventually being transferred to the 60-day IL.

Banks appeared in 28 games for Philadelphia before the injury, including one start. He struggled during that stretch, going 0-4 with a 7.14 ERA and 2.00 WHIP while striking out 32 batters over 29 innings.
The Phillies will hope his return gives their bullpen another left-handed option as they head into the final weeks of the regular season.

Holman, meanwhile, was optioned after a difficult appearance in Saturday’s 12-2 loss to the Braves. He recorded just one out while allowing four hits, a walk and five runs.
All five runs were officially unearned because of errors behind him, leaving Holman with a 0.00 ERA in his major league debut. He will return to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Cairo was designated for assignment after spending the entire season with Lehigh Valley. The infielder hit .229 with four home runs, 35 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 105 games.
The Phillies enter Sunday at 82-67 and five games behind the Braves in the NL East. Philadelphia still holds a strong position in the Wild Card race, but the bullpen will be an important part of the team’s postseason push.
Banks now gets another opportunity to contribute after spending more than two months on the shelf.
