According to OptaStats, the Rams are the only team in NFL history to lose with 400-plus total yards, 30-plus first downs and five touchdowns while converting half their third-downs and committing no turnovers.

In overtime, coach Sean McVay opted for a 48-yard field goal that was blocked, and Josh Allen and the Bills won it on the next possession.

McVay drew criticism for settling for a field goal on fourth-and-5 from the Bills’ 30-yard line after Harrison Mevis had already missed a 50-yard field goal wide left. With the offense humming, McVay said afterward he wished he’d called a better third-down play to set up a shorter fourth down.

Sean McVay takes the blame

“I’m sick right now with myself and I’m so proud of that group,” McVay said. “This is the tough part of sports but I’m proud of that team. I’m proud of the way that we battled. And I’m sick that we came up short. I’ll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was. It’s on me.”

One wasted night for the offense

The blocked kick dropped the Rams to 2-3 despite an offense firing on all cylinders. Matthew Stafford completed 74% of his passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns, Kyren Williams and Blake Corum each scored, and Puka Nacua had a monster night: 17 catches, 138 yards and a touchdown.

Special teams, a problem for the Rams in recent years, cost them again, and changes at kicker could be coming.

It’s a stunning turn of events for Mevis, who entered the season with McVay’s full confidence and now could be replaced soon.

“I’m going to evaluate everything,” McVay said.
