LOS ANGELES – Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday morning that they had yet to determine a timeline for Myles Garrett, who is set to undergo knee surgery Monday and be placed on the injured reserve.

The reigning two-time Defensive Player of the Year will miss at least the next four games starting with next Monday’s game against the New York Giants, a league source familiar with his injury told the Southern California News Group on Sunday. McVay said that he made the decision following his press conference after the 27-7 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers at Melbourne Cricket Ground, speaking to Garrett soon thereafter.
“Thought we would take an approach where he’d be feeling good enough to go contribute positive change and be the player that he’s capable of,” said McVay, who said any timeline for Garrett was contingent on what happened Monday. “That wasn’t the case. And so the next right thing for us is to be able to get this thing fixed.”
McVay continued: “We knew that we were managing a situation. It’s why he’d missed so much practice time, (and we) felt like he was still going to be able to affect and influence positive change. And then getting out there in those true settings revealed, OK, maybe that wasn’t the case. And so what’s the next right thing for us? And that’s the next step that we took.”
McVay said that he thought that Garrett’s injury was something he would have been able to work through. It wasn’t.
Garrett admitted discomfort following the game, saying that he was in pain and not at 100% during the game.
“This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there,” Garrett said Friday in Australia. “I’ve got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and that I’ve shown I’ve been before.”
Garrett tallied just one pressure and didn’t record a sack or a tackle against the 49ers. It was just the fourth time in his NFL career in which he didn’t record a tackle.

“Obviously, we thought we were doing the right thing. In hindsight, you’ll always be able to learn from it,” McVay said. “I’ll never hang on to whether you want to say it was a mistake, or just different things to be able to kind of change course if that’s the right line of trajectory, and so, it was right after the game that we kind of knew that was the direction that we thought, and obviously, you’re talking to him and seeing how he and his group feel, and that’s what we made the decision on.”
Donald Time?
With Garrett out for an unclear amount of time, the spotlight on Aaron Donald – who, three weeks ago came out of retirement to rejoin the Rams – is brighter. Entering Week 2, the former three-time Defensive Player of the Year is no longer on the commissioner’s exempt list, which means that the 35-year-old will count on the Rams’ 53-man roster going forward.

“I haven’t decided that yet,” McVay said. “He’s going to continue to work his process, and we’ll see what that looks like.”
Battered Rams
McVay provided injury updates for players who suffered injuries during the season-opening defeat.
Safety Kam Curl (ankle) has some soreness, but returned to the game Friday. … Linebacker Nate Landman has a shoulder and a thumb ailment, but McVay expects him to be available vs. Giants. … Tight end Davis Allen (concussion protocol) returned to the game. …
Linebacker Omar Speights, however, suffered a hip pointer during the game and has some swelling.
“We’ll kind of manage him throughout the week, but he’s feeling better than what we had anticipated,” McVay said. “He’s as tough as it gets, and so he’s making positive gains right now.”
