The Texas Rangers are changing their pitching plan for Thursday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox.

The Rangers announced that left-hander Tyler Alexander will open the game, with Cody Bradford expected to follow and handle the bulk of the innings. The decision came shortly after Texas beat Boston 7-3 on Wednesday night.
Alexander has been a regular bullpen option for Texas this season. The veteran lefty has made 68 appearances, including four starts, while posting a 5-2 record, a 3.38 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP across 66.2 innings.

The move gives Texas a different look at the start of the game before Bradford takes over. It also comes as the Rangers continue managing their pitching staff late in the season.
Nathan Eovaldi provided a major boost Wednesday after moving into a relief role. Recently activated from the injured list, Eovaldi threw four scoreless innings against Boston, allowing one hit and no walks.
Eovaldi earned the win and now owns an 11-9 record with a 4.07 ERA and 140 strikeouts across 139.1 innings this season.

The Rangers have dealt with several pitching concerns throughout the season. Jack Leiter remains on the 60-day injured list, while Jacob deGrom has also been dealing with groin tightness.
Texas has responded with a combination of rotation adjustments and bullpen contributions. Wednesday’s win was another important result as the Rangers try to stay in the AL West race.
The Rangers entered Thursday with a 76-76 record, tied with the Houston Astros for first place in the division. Houston lost 5-2 to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, allowing Texas to pull even at the top.
With only 10 games remaining, every game carries added importance for both teams. Thursday’s pitching plan will give Texas a chance to use Alexander early before turning to Bradford for the longer outing.
The Rangers will now look to complete the series sweep against Boston and maintain their position atop the division.
