The White House asked for her to step down following reporting by the Wall Street Journal that she had asked Deters to pay her $100,000 credit card bill in exchange for access to White House officials. In her resignation, Guilfoyle denied the corruption accusations and previously cast doubt on the authenticity of the texts, which were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Deters, a former Kentucky congressional candidate, has been lobbying the Trump administration on behalf of victims of Ohio physician Abubakar Atiq Durrani. Federal authorities indicted Durrani in 2013 after he allegedly made almost 600 people undergo unnecessary spinal surgeries. He fled during the trial and is believed to be in his native Pakistan.

Deters also asked Guilfoyle to intervene on his behalf for other personal tax and legal affairs. She kept him abreast of her interactions with officials at the Department of Justice and IRS commissioner Billy Long, according to almost 300 pages of memos, letters and text messages that Deters shared with The Sacramento Bee.
