A semi-truck crashed into a Sacramento County elementary school during classes Wednesday while trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle, officials said.

According to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the semi-truck was driving about 11:20 a.m. near Anna Kirchgater Elementary School, 8141 Stevenson Ave., in south Sacramento when the driver attempted to avoid a collision with a passenger vehicle by making “a sharp evasive maneuver,” officials said.
“The truck left the roadway, collided with a sound wall, and ultimately crashed into Anna Kirchgater Elementary School,” said Capt. Mark Nunez, a spokesperson for Metro Fire.

The driver of the semi-truck was trapped inside the cab and was extricated by crews before being transported to the hospital for evaluation. The driver of the passenger vehicle was not injured, and no students, teachers or staff members at the Elk Grove Unified School District school were injured.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Nunez said.
