Folsom residents don’t agree on much. Development, sales taxes and light rail expansion are among the issues that have sparked debate around town.

But when it comes to putting city money into Bitcoin, the message from over a thousand city residents surveyed was clear: cryptocurrency doesn’t belong in Folsom’s finances.
The survey was conducted by Ideas for Change, a change.org-backed nonprofit. Its analysts grouped Folsom participants into three “opinion groups” based on shared civic values and priorities for local growth, rather than dividing residents by neighborhood, age or political party.
An overwhelming majority – 98% – of residents among two of the three groups did not want the city to invest in the cryptocurrency. The presentation did not provide the results for the third group.
Bitcoin, however, was far from the top concern.

Residents were most passionate about addressing traffic congestion at East Bidwell Street and Highway 50, which received 100% support among participants.
Other popular ideas included stronger enforcement of e-bike rules and regulations and limiting further expansion in the city. At least 91% of residents also supported cleaning up trash along White Rock Road.

City Council members said the survey identified some ideas the city had already tried to address, with mixed success.
City Manager Bryan Whitemyer said he was happy to hear directly from the community.
“We’re closer than we thought, in some regard, to what the community is wanting us to look at,” he said.
Councilmember Sarah Aquino also weighed in. “I appreciate the report,” she said. “Apparently someone suggested that we invest our resources in Bitcoin.”

“I was happy to see that it’s more than just Bitcoin,” she said.
