HUNTINGTON BEACH – St. Margaret’s looked incapable of doing much offensively or defensively in the first half of its nonleague football game against Fountain Valley.

The Tartans put together a strong second half, offensively and defensively, to beat Fountain Valley, 14-7, on Thursday at Huntington Beach High.
St. Margaret’s improved to 2-0. The Barons are 2-2.
Tartans senior receiver Jack Kleinhanzl provided all of the scoring. He scored on touchdown receptions of 80 and 84 yards and scored on a 2-point conversion catch.
St. Margaret’s senior quarterback Kai Letcher completed 11 of his 19 passes for 214 yards and the two touchdown passes.
Fountain Valley junior quarterback Isaac Combs completed 15 of 31 passes for 200 yards.
Fountain Valley scored the only points of the first half, a 7-yard touchdown run by Drake Robinson. It would be 7-0 at halftime.
In the first half, Combs received maximum time and protection in the pocket. Letcher was on the run on most of the Tartans passing plays.
That had St. Margaret’s coach Dan O’Shea concerned.
“The first half they (the Barons) kicked our keester at the line of scrimmage,” O’Shea said. “They moved the ball up and down the field on us. Our offensive line was not protecting the quarterback very well.
“I do think we responded in the second half really well.”
St. Margaret’s got its first touchdown with 2:44 left in the third quarter on an 80-yard touchdown completion from Lechter to Kleinhanzl. Kleinhanzl took a short pass and got a key block from offensive lineman Danny Lowenthal before sprinting along the left sideline, the Fountain Valley sideline, for the touchdown.

The Tartans then lined up for an extra-point kick which was faked and resulted in an incomplete pass by the holder. That left the Fountain Valley with a 7-6 lead.
The Tartans took the lead on the second Lechter-to-Kleinhanzl touchdown pass, a deep ball that Kleinhanzl caught at the Fountain Valley 37-yard line before running unhassled to the end zone. Kleinhanzl caught a pass from Letcher for two points and the 14-7 lead.
St. Margaret’s defensive back Charlie Allen made an interception in Tartans territory in the first half.
Fountain Valley missed on field-goal attempts of 27 and 24 yards.
St. Margaret’s played without leading rusher Sam Orellana (298 yards) who was out with an ankle injury. He is expected to play next week.
Fountain Valley plays at Glendora next Friday. The next game for St. Margaret’s is an on-campus home game against Capistrano Valley Christian.
The Barons this season will play in the Lambda League. The league’s other teams are Calvary Chapel, Sonora, Valencia, Westminster and Woodbridge.
St. Margaret’s is in the Kappa League with Canyon, Esperanza, Fullerton, Portola and Sunny Hills.
