At around 1 p.m., the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and fire and ambulance personnel responded to reports of a missing adult scuba diver at Sand Dollar Beach on Highway 1, according to a news release.

The beach is located near Plaskett Creek Campground, about around 14 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line on California’s Central Coast.

Arriving at the scene, first responders learned that the missing person, 38-year-old Casa Grande, Arizona, resident Trevor Valentine, was a swimmer, not a scuba diver, as initially reported.

The response included personnel from Big Sur Fire, Cambria Ambulance, California State Parks lifeguards, the U.S. Forest Service and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, according to the news release.

A lifeguard was deployed in the water near Valentine’s last known location while additional personnel searched the shoreline, according to the news release.

Valentine was found unresponsive near the rocky coastline at the south end of Sand Dollar Beach, according to the news release.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter airlifted Valentine from the coastline, transferring him to an awaiting ambulance for additional care. Valentine did not survive.

“The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the Valentine family and all those affected by the loss,” the release read. “No further information is available at this time.”
