Evacuation warnings were lifted in the Cedars community near the Talbot Fire as crews aggressively fought the 75-acre blaze burning in steep, rugged terrain near Truckee, U.S. Forest Service officials said Friday afternoon.

By Friday morning, firefighters had surrounded the fire with hose and hand lines, with bulldozers helping build control lines, according to the Forest Service and allied agencies such as the Foresthill Fire Protection District. The Sacramento Regional Type 3 Incident Management Team took command of the fire at 7 a.m. Friday.
But officials said the threat wasn’t over. Structures and private timberlands remained at risk as the Talbot Fire burned near the Granite Chief Wilderness, and evacuation warnings remained in place for portions of the Tahoe National Forest along French Meadows Road.
The fire has been burning since Wednesday on Tahoe National Forest land, off French Meadows Road near French Meadows Reservoir, and 14 miles southwest of Truckee, with 376 firefighters battling the blaze. The fire was 15% contained Friday afternoon, the U.S. Forest Service said in a Friday update.
Forest Service officials described an aggressive effort to contain the blaze, with air tankers dropping retardant from above while ground crews and bulldozers worked to build control lines around the wildfire and prevent it from spreading.

“Over the past day, both air and ground resources have been working tirelessly in full suppression strategies to contain the fire as quickly as possible,” Forest Service officials said. “Crews have made significant progress in preventing further fire spread.”
Cooler, overcast weather and higher humidity Friday helped moderate fire behavior, though officials warned that gusty winds could increase fire activity and cause the blaze to spread. Recreation areas, trails and roads in the Tahoe National Forest burn area remained closed.
The Western States Trail was closed from Forest Road 96-62 to the Granite Chief Wilderness boundary. The Pacific Crest Trail, along Forest Service Road 2000, was also closed between the PCT trailhead at Placer County Road 9001 to the north and Barker Pass Trailhead to the south.
