The Indiana Fever were at home on Tuesday night, hosting the New York Liberty. The game marked their second straight home game after playing four of the previous five on the road. But instead of getting cheers from the crowd, head coach Stephanie White was booed by the hometown crowd, likely after her comments about Chicago Sky guard Dijonai Carrington last weekend.

After the game, Fever superstar Caitlin Clark expressed her disappointment with their fans’ reaction to White. Clark went on to express her full support for White as the Fever’s head coach.
“I told (Stephanie White) that before the game, there was no way we were losing this game for her. And it’s tough. That’s my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest,” Clark said in her postgame remarks. “It’s professional sports, people are going to boo, but at the end of the day… we’re going to ride for her, and we’re always going to have her back, and that’s never going to tear our locker room apart.”

Fever fans booed White before the game
Tuesday night was the Fever’s first game after the controversial incident involving Dijonai Carrington and Sophie Cunningham, where Carrington tweeted “white privilege” after getting thrown out of the game for excessive contact on a foul on Sophie.
After that game, White told reporters during the postgame press conference that she was fine with Carrington’s hard foul on Cunningham.
And shared that she did not think that Dijonai intended to hurt Sophie on that play. Some Fever fans felt that Steph didn’t do enough to defend Sophie with her statements and seemed to favor the opposing player.
But Caitlin, who’s experienced more than her share of criticisms from fans, said she understood what her coach felt when White unloaded her feelings to reporters right before the game.
“I just love her, and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot at times and she does a great job a lot of times blocking it out, but there’s other moments where it can get under your skin, and that’s just being human, and that’s just life,” Clark added.

Sophie also defended Coach White
Like Caitlin, Cunningham, the woman at the center of the controversy, also batted for White and dismissed rumors that the Fever locker room is on the bubble after White’s statement. According to Feaver gurad, she has no issues with Steph and that everything is just outside noise.
“That’s what it is to be (on the) Indiana Fever – on the staff or as a player. You know when you come here, that’s going to be one of the things that’s going to try to distract you. But our locker room in there, it’s tight, and we have each other’s backs. Coach loves us,” Cunningham said. “Me and Steph are great. Steph is great with all of us. And so it’s really the outside noise that’s trying to distract us, but we’re good.”
“At the end of the day, she didn’t see the clip,” Cunningham said. “And you know what, DiJonai, she is a hell of a player. She’s a great defender. And so (White) coached her for, I don’t know how many years, up in Connecticut. So give her her flowers, and she didn’t see it, and that’s okay.”
Before CC and Sophie talked to reporters, they played big roles in Indiana’s 106-92 trashing of the New York Liberty. It was Kelsey Mitchell who led the way with 28 points, but Caitlin had 22 points and 10 assists while Sophie scored 12 points on 4-5 3-point shooting as the Fever improved to 21-12 on the season, 4th best in the league this year.
But as we saw in that presser, there were more off-court questions than on-court ones, and that has been what the WNBA has been as of late.
