DaVon Hamilton is the MVP of this game

DaVon Hamilton is better known for his work on the interior of the defense, but when long snapper Ross Matiscik was ruled out due to a shoulder injury, Hamilton stepped in. While the snaps were high, the Jaguars’ kicking game went one-for-two on extra points and two-for-two on field goals, including the 57-yarder that gave Jacksonville the game. Unfortunately, the uncertainty surrounding the kicking game led to two separate goal-line stands from the Eagles’ defense that could have been up to six points with a standard field goal operation. But when the game was on the line, the special teams made the plays necessary. A big nod also goes to Ameer Abdullah, who returned the final kickoff to the Jaguars’ 39-yard line, putting them in position to win.

Penalties Are Still an Issue

After being touted as the least penalized team in the league, Jacksonville was flagged for 13 penalties today for 100 yards, the second week in a row where the Jaguars have had over 100 yards of penalty yardage and double-digit penalties. Head coach Liam Coen noted in his post-game press conference that the Jaguars couldn’t “get in the flow” of the game and that is likely due to the number of penalties, but also their timing. Jacksonville had multiple procedural penalties, including a delay-of-game penalty inside the Eagles’ five-yard line that left Trevor Lawrence visibly frustrated and led him to spike the ball during the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the Jaguars were able to overcome these shortcomings, but if they are looking to contend for anything past a playoff spot, they have to go back to playing clean football to allow themselves to get into a rhythm.

Jacksonville Continues to Find Ways to Win

The Jaguars’ defense held the Eagles to 22 total yards rushing the ball, one yard less than their 23-yard performance last week. It’s the first time that Jacksonville has held a team under 30 yards in multiple games in one season since 2006 and the first time it’s been in back-to-back weeks. Jacksonville’s special teams had to overcome some significant shortcomings, including an opening kickoff called back due to penalties, but they came up big when they needed it most. The offense was derailed by multiple penalties; Lawrence fumbled twice and threw an interception due to the amount of pressure Philadelphia was able to dial up, but when the time came, Lawrence found Parker Washington to put them ahead late. Jacksonville continues to find a way to win when adversity hits, and this is two weeks in a row that they had to win an ugly game. While the penalties and the operation as a whole need to be cleaned up, it’s a good sign that Jacksonville continues to find ways to win even when the conditions are suboptimal.
