Ty Dieffenbach’s Journey To Becoming UCLA’s New Potential QB1

I feel certain that few Bruins fans could have seen Ty Dieffenbach as the starting quarterback leading the 5-0 UCLA Bruins.

Nico Iamaleava suffered an injury in the second quarter during the win against Oregon, and we saw our first look at what the rest of UCLA’s season will look like as Dieffenbach relieved him.

Pittsburgh Commit Out of High School

I also feel confident that Dieffenbach himself may not have expected the role he has now. Coming out of high school, he was a three-star commit who originally committed to and enrolled at Pittsburgh.

Dieffenbach utilized a reshirt after not seeing the field in his first season as a Panther, and his second season with the team told the same story. Originally from California, he would then transfer closer to home to Cal Poly and finally saw the field last season as a Mustang.

He played in 11 games and completed 92-of-162 passes for 1,305 yards and nine touchdowns with equal interceptions. It wasn’t the most prolific performance, but it landed him an opportunity to transfer to UCLA this past offseason.

UCLA’s Starting Quarterback

Now, UCLA’s season will rest partially on the shoulders of Dieffenbach as he jumps into a very difficult situation. It was interesting that Dieffenbach initially got the call to relieve Nico against Oregon, as it had been Madden Iamaleava in every other game prior, who sat in the role of QB2.

In his postgame press conference, Bob Chesney noted that he was impressed with the week Dieffenbach had put together in practice that week, therefore getting his number being called when Iamaleava went down. In that same press conference, Chesney seemingly announced that Dieffenbach would continue as the team’s quarterback moving forward.

“I think that Ty’s [Dieffenbach] certainly earned the right to be out there to put us in a position to do what he did,” Chesney said. Dieffenbach was put in a very tough situation last Saturday, coming off the bench to begin the second quarter against a ranked Oregon team that had been giving Iamaleava plenty of trouble up to that point.

While he didn’t pass at a high volume, it was his command of the offense and his ability to limit mistakes that ultimately impressed many viewers, as well as Chesney. It’s a tough season ahead, and Dieffenbach will need all the support he can get as this team navigates a mid-season quarterback change.
