Dozens of local races across the Sacramento area remain open to new candidates after incumbents failed to file for reelection by the regular deadline, giving prospective candidates until Aug. 12 to enter the November election.

The extension does not necessarily mean a race is uncontested or that no one has filed. It means there were not enough candidates by the original deadline to close the filing period.
Under California election law, the extension is triggered when an eligible incumbent does not file by 5 p.m. Aug. 7. The five-day extension gives other qualified candidates an opportunity to file.
The extension applies to local races, including city, school district and special district offices. It does not apply to state offices.
The extension does not apply if there is no eligible incumbent or if the incumbent has reached the maximum number of terms allowed under the California Constitution.
