Jim Ross is preparing for brain surgery as the legendary wrestling commentator looks to address the health problems that have affected him in recent months. Ross has remained optimistic ahead of the procedure and recently shared more details about what doctors will do during the operation.
The WWE Hall of Famer is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday, August 12, in Norman, Oklahoma. The procedure will involve the placement of a brain shunt designed to help manage excess fluid and reduce pressure inside his skull.
The veteran revealed the details in a post on X on Tuesday while thanking fans for their support.
“A hole will be drilled in my skull and a small tube will be inserted reachinto my stomach to better manage/drain excess brain fluid,” Ross wrote. “I’m optimistic. Thanks to all.”
The procedure is intended to address the fluid buildup that doctors believe has contributed to some of the serious issues Ross has experienced. The commentator has dealt with memory and balance problems in recent months, including periods when he struggled with his memory.

The 74-year-old AEW commentator is also expecting a relatively quick return home following the procedure. On the previous episode of his “Grilling JR” podcast, he revealed that he was told by the doctors that he would be discharged just one day after the surgery, something that surprised him given the seriousness of the operation.
Ross revealed in July that he would need brain surgery. The latest update provides a clearer picture of what doctors hope to accomplish with the operation.
Jim Ross’ Health Battle Has Kept Him Away From His Usual Routine
The surgery comes after a difficult stretch for Jim Ross, who spent 30 days in the hospital earlier this summer after dealing with an undisclosed medical issue. His health problems have made the past several months particularly challenging for the longtime commentator.
The timing is also notable for another reason. Ross’ AEW contract is set to expire at the end of August, leaving his professional future uncertain as he focuses on his recovery. He last appeared in the Tony Khan-led promotion in May at Double or Nothing.
For now, however, the priority is his health. Ross has approached the procedure with optimism and has continued to acknowledge the support he has received from wrestling fans.
