New York Yankees fans can breathe a sigh of relief: both manager Aaron Boone and Cam Schlittler himself confirmed that he will be just fine after taking a line drive off the back of his leg on Sunday.

Schlittler was in the midst of twirling another gem on Sunday, shutting out the cross-town rival New York Mets through six innings. But a 111.5 mph comebacker off the bat of Bo Bichette struck Schlittler in the back of his right leg, forcing the pitcher to leave the game. The Yankees would go on to win the game by the score of 2-0, and Schlittler picked up his 14th win of the season.

With the shutout, Schlittler lowered his MLB-leading ERA to 1.945, a shade lower than Jacob Misiorowski’s ERA of 1.952. Schlittler is the current betting favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award and has been in a close race against Toronto’s Dylan Cease all season long.
When asked about his status after the game, Schlittler told reporters that he thinks he will be fine after a couple of days. As posted by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Schlittler had the following to say:
“Feeling good. Hamstring, hard hit. So it’ll be a fun couple of days trying to get that recovered. But I think we’re in a good spot.”

Boone reiterated Schlittler’s words during his post-game press conference.
“I think so,” Boone said of Schlittler’s health. “He got it pretty good off the hamstring, but hopefully he should be okay.”

Schlittler was showered with praise following another dominant outing, with three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge calling him his choice for the AL Cy Young Award. Boone took that one further and opined that Schlittler “might be the MVP, too”.
As of now, Schlittler told reporters that he is expecting to make his next start, which likely will not come until next weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks. That start should be Schlittler’s second-to-last start of the season, although the Yankees will be cautious with their ace. Most importantly, the Yankees will need Schlittler to be full-go for when the MLB playoffs begin on Sept. 29.
