The crash occurred just after 8 a.m. on Mather Boulevard near Douglas Road, according to CHP dispatch logs.

The boy and his mother were in a Hyundai Elantra traveling south on Mather Boulevard, south of Douglas Road, when the sedan crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Equinox in the northbound lane, according to the CHP’s East Sacramento office.

CHP officials said the boy appeared to have been sitting unrestrained in the right front seat of the Hyundai at the time of the crash. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
