3 Main Takeaways From Cowboys’ Ugly 28-20 Loss to Giants

The Dallas Cowboys entered Week 1 hoping their revamped defense and explosive offense would establish them as legitimate contenders. Instead, many of their biggest offseason concerns surfaced during Sunday night’s 28-20 loss to the New York Giants.

Dallas was out gained 394-244, committed nine penalties for 90 yards and possessed the ball for only 23:20. Here are three main takeaways from the disappointing season opener.

1. Dallas’ rebuilt defense failed its first test

The Cowboys invested heavily in their defense during the offseason, but the new-look unit struggled to contain Jaxson Dart and the Giants.

Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding 54 rushing yards. New York accumulated 165 yards on the ground and controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes.

Dallas’ biggest problem was its inability to finish drives. The Giants converted nine of 11 third downs, allowing them to wear down the Cowboys and limit Dak Prescott’s opportunities.

Isaiah Likely repeatedly exploited breakdowns in coverage, finishing with eight receptions 78 yards and two touchdowns. Despite having Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku, Dallas struggled to generate consistent pressure or maintain its assignments.

One poor performance does not define Christian Parker’s defense, but the unit looked alarmingly similar to the group Dallas spent the offseason trying to fix.

2. Costly mistakes changed the game

The Cowboys had several opportunities to seize momentum but repeatedly hurt themselves.

Late in the first half, George Pickens dropped a potential 40-yard completion that would have moved Dallas into scoring range. Prescott later attempted to throw the ball away under pressure, but his pass failed to reach the sideline and was intercepted by Jevon Holland.

The Giants quickly converted the turnover into a touchdown, taking a 14-7 lead into halftime. Then they opened the third quarter with 12-play, 74-yard touchdown that consumed roughly eight minutes.

Javonte Williams committed another critical mistake after catching a 17-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. His taunting penalty pushed the extra-point attempt back 15 yards, and Brandon Aubrey missed the 48-yard kick.

Instead of pulling within seven points, Dallas remained down 28-20.

3. The offense never found its rhythm

Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Cowboys scored on both of their second-half possessions, but the defense’s inability to leave the field prevented the offense from completing a comeback.

Dallas also failed to establish its rushing attack. Williams led the team with only 41 yards, while the Cowboys finished with 69 rushing yards and averaged 3.8 yards per carry.

CeeDee Lamb provided a bright spot with a touchdown, but Dallas’ talented passing attack never consistently threatened New York downfield.

The Cowboys now return home to the Washington Commanders in Week 2. Cleaning up penalties and defensive breakdowns must be the priority after a season opener that head coach Brian Schottenheimer admitted “humbled” his team.
