Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, is calling out the league in regards to its head coaches.

Dawn Staley, who is Black, is arguably the top coach in all of women’s basketball. But she coaches at the college level, leading the South Carolina program. Staley has been linked to some professional jobs, though she’s ultimately stayed put, leading the Gamecocks program.
Bueckers, though, has decided to call out the WNBA, taking issue with their lack of diversity in coaching. Bueckers would like to see more Black, female head coaches leading teams in the WNBA.
Bueckers, who has emerged as one of the top young guards in the WNBA, has a big voice throughout the league.
She’s made it clear that she would like to see more diversity in coaching.
Bueckers wants more diversity in head coaches in WNBA
Bueckers is directly calling out the WNBA in the middle of the 2026 regular season, putting the league on notice.
“I’m for equal opportunity, no discrimination based on what you look like, who you like and anything of that nature. I grew up with a lot of prominent Black women in my life that were very important to me in how I was raised and how I grew up, being my stepmom, my AAU coach,” Bueckers said.

“I understand how amazing they are and how they should get the same equal opportunity as a white woman, as a white man to be an important piece of this league. And it was built on a lot of Black women, this league, so it’s definitely right for them to get the same equal opportunity as everyone else.”
Bueckers previously called out the media, for how they cover Black female athletes.
“As a White woman who leads a Black lead sport and celebrated here i want to show a light on black women, they don’t get the media coverage that they deserve they’ve given so much to this sport,” she said at The ESPYs.
“Everyone who voted thank you but i think we should use this power together to also celebrate black women.”
