Auburn names veteran city manager for interim role. What comes next in the search?

The Auburn City Council has appointed James Lindsay as the city’s interim city manager.

Lindsay may work up to 960 hours during the fiscal year, according to city officials. He will earn $108.94 per hour — the equivalent of the previous city manager’s hourly rate — and will not receive benefits.

The limit allows the city to fill the role on an interim basis through December, provided Lindsay works full time.

City officials were not available to discuss a timeline for hiring a permanent city manager or to provide additional details about the search. However, Lindsay’s interim appointment indicates the city is continuing its search for a permanent replacement.

Lindsay brings municipal leadership experience to the position, having previously served as city manager in Saratoga and Lodi. He also serves as a senior adviser for the International City/County Management Association and Cal Cities.

The appointment follows the departure of former City Manager Sean Rabé, who recently accepted a position as Placer County’s assistant chief executive officer. Rabéserved as Auburn’s city manager for the past three years before leaving for the county role.
