For New England Patriots fans, it’s been a superb start to training camp 2026.
All the news on two key fronts was positive, led by the owner addressing the Christian Gonzalez contract situation early in the morning before the team’s first official practice.

“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest paid player ever to play that position in the NFL,” said Patriots boss Robert Kraft. “Coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots’ franchise history. We’re glad we drafted him and he’s developed here. We hope he’ll be with us for a long time.”
Out on the field working
Gonzalez, as promised by head coach Mike Vrabel in Friday’s opening camp address, was on the field and competing in individual drills with his team. You could surmise that means he and his representatives are happy with the progress being made in the discussions.
Heading into his fourth season, the Pro Bowl cornerback is slated to make just $2.8 million this year and upwards of $18 million next year if no extension is signed.
Gonzalez reportedly is seeking to be extended and paid among the highest paid cornerbacks in the game.

Top corners get paid
Currently, the Rams’ Trent McDuffie ($31 million per year), Indy’s Sauce Gardner ($30 million per year) and Houston’s Derek Stingley ($30 million per year) are the top-paid players at the position.
Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon, selected ahead of Gonzalez in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, is currently in a similar contract situation with the Seahawks.
Report: Jacas finally signs
News broke off the field, pre-practice as well on rookie Gabe Jacas. The second-round edge-rushing draft pick out of Illinois, who has not been with the team at all through spring and summer, has finally agreed to his rookie contract, according to Jordan Schultz of the Schultz report. The deal is set for four years and $8.6 million.
Jacas’ immersion into action will hinge on his physical upon his arrival at Gillette Stadium.
