The Golden State Warriors couldn’t acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, Anthony Davis or LeBron James, but they still have Draymond Green.

Green has agreed to return to the Warriors on a one-year, $27.7 million contract, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN on Tuesday. Players with eight years of service and four years with the team giving them a contract are eligible for a no-trade clause when signing a new standard free-agent deal rather than an extension, but Green reportedly did not get one.
The new contract is equal to what Green was owed in the final year of his previous contract. The 36-year-old forward opted out of the final year of that deal to give Golden State the financial flexibility to pursue James, but James ultimately chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Green has been a key to Golden State’s success since the Warriors selected him out of Michigan State with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2012 NBA draft. He has averaged 8.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks over 14 seasons in the NBA.
Green is a four-time All-Star, a two-time All-NBA selection and a nine-time All-Defensive Team selection. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
Green teamed with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to form a dynasty under coach Steve Kerr. That group led Golden State to four NBA championships from 2015-2022, but the aging Warriors missed the playoffs two of the past three seasons.

Thompson was traded in 2024. Kerr contemplated retirement before agreeing to a two-year contract extension in May. Curry and Green will both become unrestricted free agents next summer unless Curry agrees to an extension.
The Warriors went 37-45 to finish ninth in the Western Conference last season. They failed to reach the playoffs after losing in the play-in tournament.
Jimmy Butler played 38 games before tearing his right ACL in January. Curry was limited to 43 games, missing much of the season due to a knee injury. Moses Moody played 60 games before tearing his left patellar tendon. Butler and Moody are both expected to miss the start of the 2026-27 season.
Kerr, Curry and Green are hoping the Warriors can somehow find a way to contend for another title — or at least return to relevance — but the clock is ticking and their days together could be numbered.
