Whitney has had some championship football highlights in its 21-year existence, but the Wildcats suffered in recent years, winning three games in 2022, two in 2023, two in 2024 and two last season. After topping the Raging Rhinos 35-34 on Friday night in a packed-house thriller to halt Twelve Bridges’ 32-game regular-season, nonplayoff winning streak, Whitney is now bouncing to a different step.
The Wildcats and impressive first-year coach Brian Brickey now stand at 3-0 for the first time since 2008, when the Wildcats went 13-0 under coach Mike Gimenez and won a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship. The team moves to No. 12, up four spots in The Sacramento Bee rankings.
Easton Tarble rushed for 112 yards and three scores and he iced the game with a late interception, Bradley Duncan passed for 310 yards and two scores and Cash Stevens and Jason Taormino combined for 27 tackles.
Folsom is 3-0
The top-ranked Folsom Bulldogs moved to 3-0 with a 49-24 victory at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep in San Francisco, though coach Paul Doherty said his team remains a work in progress.
Folsom had three first-quarter turnovers a week after storming to a 28-7 halftime lead at home against powerhouse Mission Viejo, which turned into a 35-21 Folsom victory. EJ Coleman had a defensive score for Folsom on Friday, and Cal-committed quarterback Brody Rudnicki scored on the ground and through the air, including hitting Rockwell Lyons for a 26-yard touchdown. Lyons is the brother of former Bulldogs star quarterback Ryder Lyons.
Oak Ridge notches another big win
No. 2 Oak Ridge is 2-1 with inspired wins in Texas and in Southern California last week, topping state-ranked Crean Lutheran, 28-21 as Nick Johnson passed for 173 yards and hit Jack Granrud for a touchdown. Johnson also ran for a score, Dylan Esten rushed for 84 yards and two scores and linebacker leader Brayden Molloy made eight tackles and had an interception.
Grant rolls behind QB, defense
No. 3 Grant beat a good Lincoln of Stockton team 31-6 has Blake Nycum passed for 306 yards and three touchdowns to Da’Marcus Brown, and the senior quarterback ran for 73 and a score.
National recruit linebacker Julian Bruno had 12 tackles for Grant, and sophomore defender Latana Koniseti had two sacks and five tackles. Koniseti is the son of Kipeli Koniseti, Grant’s star quarterback for the 2008 CIF State Open Division title team. Said the proud father earlier this season of his son. “Wait until you see what he can do.”

DCA is dangerous
The Destiny Christian Academy Lions of Sacramento opened the season with a rout of Inderkum, then rolled Rodriguez of Fairfield — and then survived against Yuba City on Friday, prevailing 10-9 in a gritty effort for first-year coach Antuan Simmons. He has dedicated this season to his parents and mother-in-law, all of whom died in recent months.
Vincent Scott hit Ahmir Laster for a touchdown, the defense was nails and Silas Moore kicked a field goal and an extra point that proved to be the difference for DCA. DCA moves up to No. 8 in the rankings. Its Metro League schedule includes Antelope on Oct. 9 and a home game against Grant on Oct. 16.
Woodcreek’s sweet revenge
The finest season in the 31-year history of the Woodcreek Timberwolves program in Roseville ended in misery, a loss to storied Sonora, 41-14, in a CIF Northern California title game as Sonora went on to repeat as a CIF state champion.
Sonora coach Kirk Clifton said afterward that they don’t play flag football or 7-on-7 games in Tuolumne County. They play smashmouth tackle football. Message received.
No. 9 Woodcreek rolled in the rematch 62-13 as Dylan England dazzled. The senior completed 18 of 19 passes for 390 yards and five touchdowns, hitting Trace Murchison 11 times for 182 yards and two scores and finding Ethan Keim four times for 87 yards and two scores.
Jeremiah Whyte rushed for 98 yards and three scores for coach Kyle Stowers and staff to remain unbeaten.
Inderkum faced state No. 1
The Inderkum Tigers started this season Bee-ranked fourth and have dipped to 11th because of their strength of schedule, which includes a loss to No 8 DCA and a 41-0 setback to state-ranked No. 1 Santa Margarita of Orange County, the same program that finished state-ranked No. 1 last season after winning the CIF State Open championship.
Santa Margarita led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at the half. Inderkum and coach Justin Reber host Folsom in nonleague play on Friday. Reber schedules tough to toughen up his team.
