The San Francisco 49ers are adding a former Folsom Bulldog to compete for a roster spot.

The 49ers, who began training camp this week, plan to sign tight end Josiah Deguara, a league source confirmed to The Sacramento Bee. Deguara was a three-sport athlete at Folsom where he graduated in 2015 and helped the team win a Division 1 state championship as a junior in 2014.
Deguara, 29, has appeared in 77 games over six NFL seasons. He was a third-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2020 where he played four years before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2025.
Deguara’s most productive campaign as a pass catcher came with Green Bay in 2021 when he caught 25 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He has 53 catches for 471 yards and three touchdowns for his career. He’s known for his positional versatility and athleticism; he ran a 4.72 in the 40-yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 25 times at the scouting combine.
Deguara played basketball, football and baseball at Folsom. At 6-foot-2, he was listed as a forward for the basketball team where he played varsity for three seasons. He played baseball for one season on JV where he pitched and played the infield, according to Max Preps.
Football was clearly his best sport. As a senior, he logged 114 catches for 1,671 yards and 24 touchdowns in 16 games. He was similarly productive as a junior, with 104 catches for 1,354 yards and 16 scores when the Bulldogs won the state title. Deguara spent four years at the University of Cincinnati where he combined for 77 catches for 972 yards and 12 touchdowns his final two seasons.

Deguara came into the NFL as a hybrid tight end and “H-Back” where he lined up all over the formation. His addition to San Francisco makes sense for depth purposes at tight end and fullback, where 10-time Pro-Bowler Kyle Kuszczyk is the only player at the position. Deguara will have a chance to compete for a roster spot with Jake Tonges, Luke Ferrell, Brayden Willis, Hayden Rucci and Tanner McLachlan while George Kittle continues to work back from his Achilles tear.
Kittle has been an active observer at training camp, watching closely while communicating with his teammates and coaches as he continues to rehab. Kittle is on the active/physically unable to perform list and is aiming to be available for Week 1 when the 49ers travel to Melbourne, Australia to play the Los Angeles Rams. Kittle suffered the injury in the January playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 49ers are expected to have their first padded practice of training camp at their Santa Clara facility on Friday. No corresponding roster move has been announced.
The Athletic was first to report the 49ers were planning Deguara on Thursday.
