Gov. Gavin Newsom will travel to Michigan later this week, days after leftist challenger Abdul El-Sayed triumphed in the state’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary over Rep. Haley Stevens, an establishment-backed moderate.

Newsom will stump on behalf of Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is running for governor, and hold a fundraiser for attorney general candidate Eli Savit, according to his political team.
The governor, who is a prolific fundraiser for other Democrats, has raised $154,000 for the Michigan Democratic Party, according to Axios. He previously traveled to Nevada last month and also plans to travel to the South later this summer as his time in office winds down. He is believed to be planning a run for president in 2028.
It was not yet clear if Newsom will meet with El-Sayed, a former public health official whom the California governor endorsed immediately after El-Sayed won his primary Tuesday. El-Sayed won by less than 1 percentage point in a race that was dominated by interparty fighting over U.S. aid to Israel, as pro-Israeli groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee gave millions to Stevens’ campaign.
On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., called the race’s outcome “a wake-up call to the Washington Democratic establishment” as left-wing and populist candidates have surged over more middling ones in recent months.
Michigan is considered a swing state and if El-Sayed beats Republican Mike Rogers in the general election, it could hand control of the Senate to Democrats.

“There is no taking back the Senate without winning in Michigan and there are flippable House races there that will determine control of Congress,” Newsom said in a donation pitch to supporters last week. “And heaven help us if we don’t take back either. With two more years of unchecked power on Trump, we may have had our last free and fair elections in this country.”
Newsom, who first entered San Francisco politics in the 1990s as a pro-business moderate, previously sidestepped the ideological conflict between establishment Democrats and members of the Democratic Socialists of American who run for office as Democrats.
At an education press conference last month, he said interparty ideological debate was “healthy.”
Newsom will also canvass in Michigan for House Democratic candidates, attend a Sunday church service, and conduct meetings and meet-and-greets with organized labor, students and Detroit-area faith leaders.
