By admin Northern California drivers traveling into the Bay Area will soon face a detour of more than 10 miles due to a weekend-long bridge closure between Solano and Contra Costa counties, according to Caltrans.

The westbound Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge over the Carquinez Strait will close for 53 hours starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. The closure will begin at Interstate 780 in Vallejo and extend across the Carquinez Strait to Crockett.
Construction crews will replace the asphalt surface over the bridge’s steel deck to preserve the Interstate 80 crossing and provide a smoother driving surface.
While the toll bridge is closed, westbound drivers will need to use the Benicia-Martinez Bridge and follow detours along Interstate 680, Highway 4 and Interstate 780. For drivers traveling from Fairfield or points farther east, the Interstate 680 detour would add about 13 miles. The other detour outlined by Caltrans would add more than 17 miles to the trip.

Eastbound lanes from bay cities to the Central Valley will remain open.
Caltrans District 4 officials said the closure is expected to end at 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24.
Future projects for the bridge include removing the existing toll booths to make way for cashless tolling.
