A wanted, knife-wielding man set an apartment ablaze and held off police for hours on the roof of the building during a tense standoff in south Sacramento’s Parkway neighborhood before officers took him into custody late Monday.

The ordeal in the 20 block of La Fresa Court began just after 6:45 p.m., when officers were called to find a man wanted on outstanding warrants, the Sacramento Police Department said. The man set several small fires in the stairwells of the four-unit complex and armed himself with a knife as officers tried to reach him, prompting police to call Sacramento Fire Department crews.
Firefighters were called about an hour into the standoff for a report of smoke. But crews soon saw smoke billowing and flames coming from an open second-floor window, prompting additional crews to respond, Sacramento Fire Department Capt. Justin Sylvia said.
Crews aboard five engines and three trucks fought the flames from the ground and worked from the rear of the building to stop the fire from reaching the common attic and spreading to other units, Sylvia said.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames. No residents were injured, but the units sustained extensive smoke and water damage, Sylvia said.

The man, armed with a large cooking knife and shards of glass, appeared injured, Sylvia said, but continued to hold off officers from the rooftop while firefighters worked.
Police called in crisis negotiators to persuade the man to surrender as firefighters extinguished the fire.
Officers took the man into custody about 11:15 p.m. Monday, police officials said, while fire crews tamped down hot spots and mopped up at the scene.
