Corrections officials were investigating the death of an incarcerated man at California State Prison, Sacramento — commonly known as New Folsom — as a homicide after staff found him unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and detained his cellmate.

Walter Badelle, 37, was found unconscious and unresponsive about 2 p.m. Tuesday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a news release. Staffers provided medical aid but could not revive him. Badelle was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m.
His cellmate, 45-year-old Jonathan Blackwell, was detained by prison staff and placed in restrictive housing pending an investigation by prison officials and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Prison officials also notified the state’s Office of the Inspector General about the death.

Blackwell, who was received from Los Angeles County in 2010, was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, correctional officials said.
Badelle, who also was received from Los Angeles County, had been incarcerated at New Folsom since 2008. He was serving a 25-year sentence for second-degree robbery with enhancements for a street gang offense and firearm use. He also received two additional years in January for manufacturing a deadly weapon while incarcerated, according to the release.
