The Miami Heat had a wonderful offseason after acquiring one of the NBA’s best players, and they aren’t even done yet; they still have three roster spots to fill. The Heat will no longer be satisfied with simply making the playoffs. The Heat have spent the past four years playing in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament.

Now that they have Giannis Antetokounmpo, expectations have changed overnight. It’s difficult to predict how a team will do in a season, and for the Heat, there could be a range of possibilities. Let’s evaluate what would be the best and worst-case scenario for them this upcoming season.
Best Case: The Heat Win Another Championship
The absolute best-case scenario is winning another NBA championship. This would be setting the bar very high, but the Miami Heat always have championship aspirations, and they should, especially after adding a top-five player in the league. Miami already had one of the best defensive foundations in basketball, with Adebayo as its defensive anchor, Wiggins as its top wing, and Erik Spoelstra as its coach. Adding Giannis to that group gives the Heat the potential to have the best defense in the league.
I can’t imagine how difficult it will be for teams trying to score consistently against a frontcourt pairing of Giannis and Bam. They are two of the most versatile defenders in the league; they can both protect the rim, defend in space, and guard the perimeter. Throw Wiggins in the mix, and they absolutely have the best defensive frontcourt trio in the league. The Heat have struggled for years on the offensive side and adding a superstar like Giannis gives them a system. They no longer have to manufacture offense; they can run it through Giannis and let him take over games.
The scary part is Miami may not be finished building the roster.
The Heat still have three roster spots available and could continue looking for shooting, guard depth, and veterans. If Miami can add another quality rotation player or two, this roster could look even better by the time the playoffs begin. The Heat have made two NBA Finals and three Eastern Conference Finals since 2020 without a player quite like Giannis. Give Spoelstra a healthy Antetokounmpo in the postseason, and there is no reason Miami shouldn’t believe it can win the whole thing.
Worst Case: Another Trip to the Play-In
The absolute worst-case scenario would obviously be missing the playoffs entirely. That seems highly unlikely, though. The only way that happens is if the Heat deal with catastrophic injuries. The more realistic nightmare would be finishing somewhere between seventh and 10th and going back to the Play-In Tournament for a fifth consecutive season.
That simply cannot happen. The race in the East has been tight over the last four seasons, and the Heat have missed the 6th seed by only a handful of games during that stretch. If they can’t get a top-6 seed after Giannis, then Houston, we have a problem. The Heat have dealt with the Play-In for way too long, and even Bam Adebayo shared his displeasure at not making the playoffs outright and his distaste for the tournament.

The Heat have proven they can be dangerous regardless of their seed, but the goal shouldn’t be surviving two extra games just to reach the first round anymore. Not after adding Giannis. The Heat need to establish themselves as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. The regular season matters, and seeding actually matters in the NBA.

Anything can happen over an 82-game season, and injuries can change everything. But if Miami’s core remains relatively healthy, another Play-In appearance would be a major disappointment. The Heat made their big move. They landed the superstar they had been chasing.
Now expectations have changed. The ceiling is a championship. The realistic floor can’t be another Play-In appearance.
